Our History
RDNC emerged in 1980 as the fruit of grassroots efforts by local residents to save a school site from demolition. What is now RDNC was then an unused elementary school -- Lucinda Weeks School - which had fallen to gradual decay. Private developers launched plans to purchase the property from the School District, demolish its unique Spanish stucco-styled buildings and erect condominiums in their place. Residents of the community rallied together in opposition, established a non-profit organization and secured a long-term lease from the San Francisco Unified School District.
Since that time, RDNC has grown into a thriving, multi-purpose, multi-ethnic community center that serves as a hub for neighborhood collaborations. RDNC's mission is to nurture a diverse urban community by developing and providing high quality youth, adult and family programs that address critical community needs and foster respect for all people and our environment.
